Calories Burned Cleaning the House

Burn Calories around the House

Most of us think that housework is a necessary evil, or just evil. However, if you’re trying to stay fit and you have a ton of house chores, you can burn calories while cleaning house.  Here are four easy ways to burn calories around the house in thirty minutes.

4 Chores and the Calories Burned

  1. Clean, clean, clean – Did you know that vacuuming the floor burns 85 calories in thirty minutes? That’s equivalent to 15 minutes of kickboxing. Sweeping the floor with a broom burns about 126 calories. Cleaning windows for 30 minutes burns 115 calories.
  2. Scrub-a-dub-dub – Vigorously scrubbing your kitchen sink, bathroom walls and floor, the toilet and bath tub burns up to 200 calories every half hour! You just don’t get a clean and germ-free kitchen and bathroom, you also get a fantastic workout!
  3. Lose an inch by (cleaning) a yard – Yard work is a great strength-training workout. Raking leaves doesn’t just work your biceps, triceps, pectoral and leg muscles, it also burns around 205 calories every half hour. After raking the leaves, mow the lawn using a push mower and burn 125 calories in thirty minutes. If you live in a cold climate, shovel snow from the driveway and get warmed up with the thought that you’re burning 205 calories.
  4. Cook and burn – A good way to stop ordering food delivery is the thought of making great meals and burning calories at the same time. Cooking burns 85 calories in the 30 minutes it can take you to prepare the family meal. You’re also saving money by doing the cooking. If you’re preparing for a party, you can take comfort in the fact that you’re burning more calories the longer you stay in the kitchen (if you don’t start eating ahead of everybody).

House chores don’t have to be an excuse for you to miss your workout. With a little change of perspective, doing your chores can be a great physical activity. Who needs a stair master if you’re running up and down the stairs fetching items? Doing household chores is great for two reasons: you get a clean house and you get to burn calories.
